The Church of England is simplifying safeguarding admin by enabling the main safeguarding systems to communicate with each other.
Why is the Church of England doing this?
The purpose of this initiative is to help church bodies to maintain accurate safeguarding records for clergy, lay ministers, employees, elected members and volunteers - and to do this as efficiently as possible.
Each church body has a legal obligation to maintain accurate safeguarding records for their own members. This information could be provided by each individual to each relevant church body; however, it can often be shared more accurately and efficiently between the church bodies themselves.
For example, David is a volunteer who helps run the church Sunday School, and the PCC is required to keep a record of his safeguarding training.
Having completed his Foundation Safeguarding Training in the Church of England’s Safeguarding Training Portal, David could give a printed copy of his training certificate to the Parish Safeguarding Officer. The certificate details could then be manually entered into their church records (e.g. their Safeguarding Hub).
However, it would be better if the Safeguarding Hub could be automatically updated as soon as the training is completed.
The automatic sharing of information between safeguarding systems is:
- More accurate - because it removes the risk of information being misread or mistyped
- More efficient - because certificates don’t need to be printed, and information doesn’t need to be manually entered
- Quicker - because church records can be updated instantly
